Robin Scully, is the art program director at Virginia Tech’s Student Engagement and Campus Life where she curates exhibits for Perspective Gallery and develops concurrent programming designed to create a rich, curiosity driven, learning environment. She and earned her M.F.A. from Radford University in visual art and was mentored by internationally known art critic Suzi Gablik who encouraged Robin to look beyond the traditional studio, gallery, and museum to build an art practice. To this end, Scully’s curatorial focus is on creating “approachable” experiences that build a patron base, often through social practice exhibitions which utilize research from science to help connect people to nature.
Robin has won awards for community outreach, student learning initiatives, diversity and inclusion and has been the recipient of multiple teaching grants. Maintaining a studio practice is integral to Robin’s work, focusing on social practice installations as well as personal creations that evolve out of fleeting moments in time and her relationship with the land in all its forms.
In addition to her role at Perspective Gallery, Robin is adjunct faculty at Virginia Tech’s School of Visual Art where she teaches drawing to majors and non-majors. Her essays on nature have been broadcast on National Public Radio and her hand built home featured in two publications. She lives with her family and many pets in the mountains of Virginia, nestled into the side of Chinkapin Hill under a forest canopy.
